Please join us between 4 and 7pm for sculpture, performance and roast chestnuts!Sita Pieraccini will give a spontaneous performance reacting to Rocca Gutteridge’s recently commissioned sculptures in the centre of Edinburgh Sculpture Workshops’ project space. “The grounded physicality of Roccas’ steel and oak sculptures are merged with a playful and intuitive performance by Sita.” Hope to see you there!

In this Edinburgh Sculpture Workshops 20th anniversary year we are going all out for the Christmas Party offering a chance to see a couple of Edinburghs best live bands and DJs for free.The Futuristic Retro Champions have been going for a couple of years now and have gained an impressive reputation in Edinburgh and beyond for their unique brand of pop/indie/electro and rousing live perfomances.Broken Records have been going from strength to strength this year including a slot on the T-Break stage at T in the Park and sets on Radio 1 and Xfm. Broken Records have very kindly agreed to do a small acoustic set for us.After the bands there will be ESW’s finest DJ’s playing an eclectic mix of party tunes to dance the night away to.This will all be happening at GRV (formerly the Left Bank) on the 19th of December kicking off at 8:30. Entrance is free and all are welcome so please spread the word. 

Last Saturday Tran Loco opened at Patriothall Gallery. This is the first show at Patriothall for ESW and will now be a regular part of the Artistic Programme. Here are some images of the opening night and the accompanying text. trans-loco.doc

Friday Night saw the Consequence Screening at the Workshop the event was a great success if a bit cold. We would like to thank everyone who braved the cold and attended. The Workshop would also like to thank Alex Hetherington and Janie Nicoll for curating the event and also all the artists who exhibited.

Remember we have the Consequence screening at the Workshop this Friday and then Trans Loco opening at WASPS Patriothall Gallery on Saturday night.

Trans Loco is a show bringing together the work of 4 recent graduates of Edinburgh College of Arts Sculpture department. The work produced for the show will be dealing with notions of movement and migration both physically and metaphorically. The show will include a selection of new 2D, 3D and video works.

The artists will be working within the gallery space at WASPS Patriothall for 2 weeks in a mini-residency this will be followed by a show opening on the evening of the 17th November then open daily until the 28th November with a chance to meet the artists at an informal talk about the exhibited works taking place on the 24th at 2pm.

This is the first show of what will become an annual fixture in Edinburgh Sculpture Workshops artistic programme.

Screening Two of an array of artists working with current trends in video in a site-specific night time event for ESW

The Consequence features a cast of emerging and established international visual artists curated by Alex Hetherington and Janie Nicoll in association with LowSalt Gallery, Glasgow and the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. These video screening events represent the third project in a series which has included an installation The Consequence devised by Hetherington and Nicoll at Intermedia in May 2007 and House/Lights a performance by Alex Hetherington at ESW in July. The themes of these works include the interrogation of gender and its repetitious repertoire; performance and technology; multiplication of and cross-referencing pre-existing material; the constructions of meaning and the nature of image with allusions to social outcasts, social constructs and scenarios whereupon image (cinema, art, theatre) and social phenomenon interchange. In turn The Consequence sets up a scenario where Hetherington and Nicoll scrutinize through these themes the work of the artists on show in relationship to their own practice.

Following on from a call out seeking video works that mirror these central themes, Hetherington and Nicoll have devised two distinct events that correspond to the spaces these videos will be presented at. LowSalt Gallery presented in October a selection of raw, disturbing, disconcerting, experimental works that connect the material of the body to modes of technological manipulation, recognizable cultural images to notions of instability and demise, cinema and found film footage to experiences of violent disruption. ESW will re-present this screening in friction and tension with more reflective, durational and performance-based pieces of film and video in a night time event. These separately installed screening projections will be connected by an “interlude” devised by the Belgian born Glasgow-based artist Nathalie de Briey, a two monitor video work by Ben Fallon, a monitor based work by Anne Colvin and an interactive piece by Dana Cooley.
